Moon Magic: The Moon’s Influence in Movies + Pop Culture

We’ve all been obsessed with the Moon for a really long time. Like really long.

When we look at prehistoric paintings from 15 000 years ago, we see the first lunar calendar. In ancient times it was used for counting days, marking important events; the Moon had Gods and Goddesses and was worshipped ~ basically has always been a pretty big deal.

Although the lovely Luna isn’t worshipped exactly in the same way anymore, we can’t help but feature the bright beautiful Moon in our movies, books, and pop culture in general. The Moon is magic and that’s why we wanted to take a look at some of the special moments throughout our recent history that included a reference to our fave celestial body.

1865: Jules Verne science fiction novel “From the Earth to the Moon”

Although written as science fiction and 106 years before we ever made it to the Moon, the author correctly predicted around 9 facts that came to life a century later, including who would be first to the Moon, the number of crew members, and how a telescope would be able to watch all the progress.

1902: The Moon makes its silver screen appearance

First appearing in the black & white silent French film called Le Voyage Dans la Lune (translated a trip to the Moon). We are happy that the Moon looks a little less creepy in future films as in this one it was almost scary! Fun fact: the film is only 13 minutes long.

1941: The Ultimate Bedtime Story

“Goodnight Moon” was written by Margaret Wise Brown and features the famous, "Goodnight room. Goodnight moon. Goodnight cow jumping over the moon.” Simply iconic.

1961: Audrey serenades us in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

In a classic scene, Audrey Hepburn sits on her windowsill and debuts her rendition of “Moon River”. A dreamy song that touches on your past and your future. This song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and two Grammys for record of the year and song of the year.

1968: “2001: A Space Odyssey”

Arguably one of the best science fiction movies about the Moon – the details were so realistic that the U.S government made the script undergo a security clearance. A must watch!

1973: The Dark Side of the Moon

One of the most influential rock albums of all time, Pink Floyd made something amazing with this album with their endless invention, musically, conceptually, and of course technically. Don’t believe us? Ask your Dad! And just about everyone can recognize the album cover.

1995: Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and Ed Harris

What do you get with those 4 actors, a whole lot of exhilaration, and the famous phrase, “Houston, we’ve got a problem”? You get a masterpiece that keeps you at the edge of your seat for the entire 2 hours and 20 min.

2001: First 3D SIM game ever

This game takes place in the year 2021 (and is pretty far off from reality) – basically a city-building game with three storylines where the Earth is doomed and so we’ve had to pick up and move to the Moon.

2010: Gru steals the Moon

“Despicable Me” brought us the cutest animated banana loving characters – the minions! And of course, a super-villain who uses a shrink ray to steal the Moon. Upon its shrinking and theft, surfers comically fall as waves disappeared and werewolves revert to being human.

2011: Moonglow Jewelry is Born That’s us! Did you know that we will soon be celebrating our 10-year anniversary? Moonglow.com was officially launched in 2012 but the idea was born in 2011. Almost a decade of “every moment having a Moon”.

2014: Walk the Moon releases “Shut Up and Dance”

Whether you love it or hate it, this song was one of the Top Singles of 2015. Its infectious beat peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top 100 while soaring to number 1 in multiple radio genres.

2019: 50 years of Moon Magic

Considered one of the greatest feats of mankind, last year we celebrated the big 5-o! 50 years since man first walked on the Moon. “Google” celebrated with an awesome graphic of an astronaut touching down and the Earth was featured as one of the “O” of Google.
